Chloride
Chloride, another important electrolyte, helps maintain water balance and acid-base balance. It is also a part of hydrochloric acid, which is quite highly concentrated in the stomach juices. Hydrochloric acid aids in protein digestion, destroys harmful bacteria, and increases the absorption of calcium and iron. Chloride also helps remove carbon dioxide (a waste product) from the cells so the red blood cells can carry carbon dioxide to the lungs for disposal (by being exhaled). The most important source of dietary chloride is sodium chloride, or salt. If sodium intake is adequate, there will be ample chloride as well.
